DENTAL SEALANTS IN MISSISSAUGA

“Protect Your Teeth with Dental Sealants”

DENTAL SEALANTS ARE A SAFE, EFFECTIVE AND PAINLESS WAY TO PROTECT YOUR TEETH, PREVENT TOOTH DECAY AND CAVITIES

Dental sealants are a safe, effective and painless way to protect your teeth, and prevent tooth decay and cavities. According to the American Dental Association, sealants on permanent molars reduce the risk of cavities by 80%. Sealants have been around since the 1960s and they work well.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children ages 6 to 11 without sealants have almost 3 times more cavities than children with sealants. 90% of cavities children get are on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The pits and grooves on these surfaces are hard to clean because of their fine size. Even a toothbrush bristle is too big to enter the groove to clean it. As a result, food and germs can get stuck in the pits and grooves and stay there for a long time, causing cavities.

DENTAL SEALANTS ARE FAST AND EASY TO APPLY

A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Sealant material flows into these pits and grooves and forms a very thin barrier. The barrier seals out bits of food and bacteria that can cause tooth decay and acid attacks increasing your chances of staying cavity-free.

There is no injection, drilling or pain management involved. Your dental hygienist at Dunwin Dental will clean and prepare the chewing surfaces of your teeth to help the sealant stick. She will then paint the sealant on the chewing surface of your tooth where it bonds and hardens. She may use a curing light to harden the sealant. It takes just a few minutes to seal each tooth.

DENTAL SEALANTS ARE INVISIBLE

Dental sealants are white or clear, smooth and very thin. They are not visible when you talk or smile and you don’t feel them.

DENTAL SEALANTS ARE DURABLE, MONEY SAVERS

Dental sealants can last up to 10 years before you need to replace them.

Because sealants can prevent cavities (and hence their treatment such as fillings, root canal therapy, crowns, caps, etc.), they can save you money in the long run.

Sealants can wear off over time or break due to chewing on ice or hard foods. Therefore, they need to be checked during your regular dental visits. Your dental hygienist can reapply sealant, if needed.

ADULTS CAN ALSO BENEFIT FROM DENTAL SEALANTS

Sealants are generally recommended for children and teenagers. Adults can also benefit from dental sealants because tooth decay and cavities can develop at any age.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL SEALANTS VIDEO

The following video briefly explains the benefits of dental sealants:

DOES MY CHILD QUALIFY FOR DENTAL SEALANTS?

Sealants are an important component of a comprehensive preventive program, which includes nutritional counseling, optimal fluoride exposure (fluoride toothpaste and fluoridated water), good oral hygiene and regular dental exams.

Dental sealants are not a substitute for good oral hygiene habits. Sealants protect chewing surfaces of some of the teeth only if your child take good care of his/her teeth at home by brushing the teeth twice a day, cleaning between the teeth daily, eating healthy diet that limits junk snacks and sugary drinks.

Regular oral exams and cleanings by your dentist are equally important.
