WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL IN MISSISSAUGA

"Trouble-Making Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed"

Of all people in the world, only 35% are born without any wisdom teeth. As the human mouth has continued to develop over the centuries, they have reached a point where most people are unable to support these teeth, also known as third molars. As a result, it is often necessary to have these teeth removed before they cause damage to neighboring teeth or other dental complications. Every year, our dentists at Dunwin Dental provide general dentistry services to help patients in the Mississauga area relieve pain and support lasting oral health by removing problematic wisdom teeth.

YOUR HEALTHY WISDOM TEETH DON'T NEED TO BE REMOVED

If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, properly aligned, fully functional, disease free, and you have no problem cleaning them properly, we recommend keeping them. There are no scientifically proven health benefits of removing wisdom teeth that don't cause any problems.

There is no point in going through unpleasant experience of wisdom tooth extraction and take surgery-related risks such as nerve damage, dry socket or damage to nearby teeth, deal with after-surgery swollen mouth and take pain killers, if you don’t have to.

Wisdom teeth exist for a reason. They are robust, long-lasting, big molars that help you maintain the structure of your jaw and prevent other teeth from shifting. Not all wisdom teeth erupt and unerupted wisdom teeth often don’t cause any problems.

SIGNS YOUR TROUBLE-MAKING WISDOM TEETH NEED TO BE REMOVED

Your wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they are causing or are likely to cause problems in the future such as:

  • Gum (periodontal) disease because your wisdom tooth is hard to brush and clean.

  • Damaging or crowding of other adult teeth because your wisdom tooth does not have enough room in the jaw to grow or it is coming in at an angle or sideways.

  • Pain, swelling and jaw stiffness due to infection of teeth and gums.

  • Destruction of tooth roots or surrounding bone due to formation of a fluid-filled sac cyst or tumour on or near your impacted wisdom tooth.

  • Infection of the soft tissue (pericoronitis) covering an unerupted or a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

If your wisdom tooth is hurting, please book an appointment with Dunwin Dental. Your dentist will examine your mouth, screen your wisdom teeth for trauma, infection, cavities etc. and take x-rays (panoramic) to assess the risk.

If needed, your dentist will recommend removing your wisdom tooth and not replacing it. She may do it herself or refer to you our in-house specialist depending on the complexity of your wisdom tooth extraction.

WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL IS A SAFE AND COMMON PROCEDURE

Wisdom tooth removal procedure is a common procedure with a high success rate of over 95%. More than 10 million wisdom teeth of 5 million people are removed each year in the USA alone.

Wisdom tooth extraction is performed using anesthesia to numb your mouth, and minimize pain and discomfort. Your wisdom tooth extraction can be a simple extraction done by your general dentist or a surgical extraction done by a specialist.

THE WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL PROCESS AND WHAT TO EXPECT

1st Appointment

When you first visit our dental office, you will have a consultation with one of our dentists to discuss whether an extraction is necessary. Some people still retain enough room in their mouths to allow their wisdom teeth to grow in. If your wisdom teeth erupt without causing any problems with the neighboring teeth, and you’re able to brush and floss them normally, there’s no reason to have them removed. They can be challenging to take care of due to their placement, but a little extra care will ensure there are no additional problems if there’s room for them.

Surgical Extraction Appointment (If Necessary)

Once you’ve been evaluated, we’ll schedule a second appointment for the extraction itself.
